Kinesiology Program Overview

Course of Study

The Kinesiology undergraduate program provides the student with a broad general education, a departmental core that studies human movement, and a correlate area of courses specific to the student's area of concentration within kinesiology. The Kinesiology curriculum leads to a bachelor of science degree that will prepare students for careers in human movement-related fields and/or advanced professional or graduate study. Kinesiology undergraduate students learn about:

• exercise stress, movement efficiency, and fitness
• social, cultural, and psychological aspects of participation in physical activity and sport
• coordination, control, and skill of physical activity
• physical growth, development, and body form throughout the life span
• the effects of therapeutic techniques of kinesiology upon recovery from physical injury
• instructional process of teaching/coaching of physical activity and sport.

A Kinesiology undergraduate may also choose to gain real-world experience through work and research or become certified as an athletic trainer or teacher. Academic advisors guide students through the requirements.

Research and Work Experience

With faculty guidance and supervision, students also have the opportunity to do research or work with agencies such as:

• high school athletic departments
• health clubs, park districts and YMCAs
• occupational therapy, cardiac rehabilitation and physical therapy departments of clinics and hospitals
• sports information offices, injury clinics, equipment manufacturers
• corporate fitness and wellness centers
• nursing homes
• Special Olympics
• radio and television stations, newspapers
• Campus Rehabilitation Center, Division of Campus Recreation

Athletic Trainer or Teacher Certification
