- Ph.D., Biomedical Sciences , University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA, 1999
- Area of Professional Interest
- Dr Huey’s area of interest is exercise physiology with a focus on cellular/molecular adaptations in skeletal muscle and how these changes relate to the function of the whole organism.
- Research Interests
- Our lab conducts research on the cellular and molecular adaptations of skeletal muscle to changes in mechanical signals (e.g. load), neural activity, or pro-inflammatory molecules. Current studies are investigating the role of small heat shock proteins (HSP) in muscle adaptation during chronic increases (functional overload, treadmill training) or decreases (denervation, spinal cord injury) in rodent muscle loading and activation, in vivo. Studies are investigating how regular exercise may enhance HSP expression and activity and potentially protect muscles from the damaging loss of muscle mass associated with elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as occurs with aging or disease. Overall, our research has implications in several areas such as the benefits of exercise training and the effects of aging and inactivity on our muscles.
