- Dr. Fernhall’s area of interest is exercise physiology with a specialization in cardiovascular function and health throughout the lifespan, particularly in populations with disabilities. He has directed cardiac rehabilitation programs for more than 20 years. Dr. Fernhall is the associate editor for Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise and serves on two editorial boards—Journal of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly.

- Exercise physiology with a specialization in cardiovascular function and health throughout the lifespan
- Investigation of cardiovascular autonomic control and function and the impact of muscle strength on functional capacity, performance and quality of life in persons with Down syndrome
- The effect of exercise on arterial health, coagulation and fibrinolysis.
