Comments from undergraduates about their experiences working in the EPL

What did you learn about doing research?

I have also learned how important it is to understand the big picture of what is taking place in a setting such as the Exercise Psychology Lab. the research and work that are taking place in the lab are making strides to improve the quality of life for older adults.

I have always been a person that is somewhat organized, but now I see how critical it is to be organized when conducting detailed research.

I think the single most important thing that I have learned from working in the lab is that organization is key to having a research lab function successfully. Everybody has to be on the ‘same page’ in order for several people to be working on the same task and without organization this would not be possible. …I guess consistency would be the second most important thing that I have learned from working in the lab.

I never realized how much behind the scenes work there is in research. At the beginning, the old [undergraduate research assistants, URA] stressed how important it was to be on top of your own assignments and to always communicate with the other URA’s and [the graduate students].

… most people don’t realize the time, effort, and dedication that is put forth in order to allow these types of labs and research to be conducted in an optimal fashion.

Attention to detail and thorough communication in every aspect of the research process has shown me how minor differences can impact the research data.

… after working on documents all summer I came to learn that because of the enormous amount of paperwork involved, strong organization was needed to help both the participants and the researchers stay on track.

... I have learned throughout the course of these past few months that an incredible amount of time and energy have gone into perfecting these tests and scripts so that they are as clear and straightforward as possible both for those administering and those participating in the tests.
