What are some the
benefits of working in the lab?
… I never imagined my experience as an undergraduate research
assistant would be such an important, not to mention, enjoyable
part of my junior year of college.
If I were to pick one aspect of my experience as the most important
and beneficial, I believe it has been the personal relationships
I’ve formed with the faculty and graduate students who have
been a constant support in my academic and personal life.
I have always been terrified of public speaking, even [in] small
groups, so I almost surprised myself with how comfortable I have
gotten with explaining and running the [different tests].
The lab experience also increased my self-confidence and my ability
to work with others, both of which will be assets to me in the future.
… the experience has increased my level of self-confidence,
both in my ability to relate to others with whom I work and in my
ability to contribute to a significant project in an academic setting.
I have become much more sensitive to the problems of the elderly
and much more sympathetic and patient in dealing with them. I have
learned things about the effects of aging on physical activity that
I hope I remember long enough to be of use to me personally many
years from now when it is my turn to be coping with a body that
finds it increasingly difficult to perform tasks that it once did
effortlessly.
