Athletic Training Educational Program
Graduate Assistantship Opportunities
Graduate students who are Certified Athletic Trainers (or eligible to sit for the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer Examination) and hold (or eligible to apply for) a current Illinois Athletic Trainer License
are eligible to apply for an assistantship. The assistantships will typically have a joint appointment between the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health to teach within the undergraduate ATEP and one of the following clinical service units: Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES)
, SportWell Center
, and Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA)
. Three of the available assistantships are allocated for SportWell and one assistantship is available from DIA.
Your statement of interest must indicate your interest in being considered for a GA position and identify your preference(s) for the clinical service unit of interest. Although the program will attempt to match assistantships with area of preference, final decisions are based, in part, on availability of opportunities. These assistantships include tuition and partial service fee waivers and a stipend of approximately $12,500 based on a 9-month, 50% appointment.
The Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services(DRES)
provides opportunities for strength development, physical conditioning and functional training for students whose disabilities significantly limit the effective utilization of the fitness and recreational resources and programs which are otherwise available to UIUC students. DRES is also home to the nationally and internationally recognized Illini Adapted Athletics Program. Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainers have a unique opportunity to work with Olympic caliber athletes and provide athletic training services to the student-athletes involved in the Illini Adapted Athletics program. Additional information on DRES is available at www.disability.uiuc.edu.
The SportWell Center
is a unique, collaborative program of the McKinley Health Center's Health Education Unit and the Division of Campus Recreation. The SportWell Center provides nutrition, fitness, and injury prevention and treatment services to the general student population, including club sport and intramural athletes. The SportWell staff consists of Certified Athletic Trainers, registered dietitians, and exercise physiologists.
The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics
(DIA) sponsors 19 varsity Big Ten sport teams. Graduate Assistants typically provide traditional athletic training services to one or more teams.
