Taping

Taping is one of the activities that athletic trainers perform in the training room. Taping is performed to prevent injuries from occurring and to help limit body part movements of athletes who have an injury.

There are many different types of tape jobs that athletic trainers can use on athletes. In the following pages we will go over and demonstrate some of the most common tape jobs that an athletic trainer will perform.

Ankle Tape

An ankle tape job is one of the most common taping techniques that athletic trainers use in the training room. It is used as a preventative measure, helping to limit ankle inversion and eversion.

An ankle tape job takes the place of wearing an ankle brace. There are several steps that must be taken to complete the tape job and these can be followed in the movie bellow.

Wrist Tape

A wrist tape is performed in a variety of sports. It is primarily used as a preventative measure against
movements. The wrist tape job limits wrist hyper-flexion and wrist-extension, two of the most common
mechanisms of wrist injuries.

There are several different ways to tape a wrist, but we will demonstrate the most common way to tape
a wrist in the movie bellow.

Arch Tape

An arch tape job is used to help athletes who have a pes cavus foot, or high arches. Individuals with this
problem often experience strains to the arch. Providing these athletes with the arch tape provides support
for the strains and will help relieve the pain that the athlete is complaining of.

Thumb Tape

Thumb sprains are caused by hyperextension of the thumb. This can be very painful and using the tape job will prevent further injury from occurring. This tape job can be found in sports such as football and basketball where the thumb is exposed and can be injured easily.

Using the tape job correctly will limit the amount of hyperextension of the thumb and decrease the pain and limit the movement.

Turf Toe Tape

Turf toe is a sprain of the great toe. It is primarily caused by hyperextension of the great toe, although hyperflexion is a mechanism of injury as well. Athletes who play on artificial turf have a higher incidence of developing turf toe, hence the name.

Before starting the tape job, you must determine if it is a hyperextension or hyperflexion injury. Turf toe can be very disabling and the tape job is used to prevent the hurtful movement from occurring.

The video above shows how to tape for a hyperextension turf toe injury.
