University of Illinois Sports Medicine

University of Illinois Sports Medicine Mission Statement

The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics (DIA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign sponsors varsity athletic teams in 19 NCAA Division I sports. There are approximately 500 athletes participating in this program. The Sports Medicine Program is responsible for the health care of these athletes. In addition to the care of the varsity athletes, the DIA is responsible for organizing event coverage at multiple locations. The DIA also runs youth summer camp programs for approximately 6000 campers from June through August. First aid and medical care for this group is also arranged and provided. The DIA wishes to provide the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art health medical care for the above population – intercollegiate athletes, spectators, and summer camp participants.

What is Athletic Training?

Athletic training is performed by a Certified Athletic Trainer, who is an allied health care provider. Athletic Trainers primarily serve to athletes, but can also work with older patients at a physical therapy clinic.

To become a Certified Athletic Trainer, you have to graduate with a Bachelor or Master’s degree from an accredited athletic training program.

Athletic trainers are looked over by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) and have to follow 6 domains, which are:

  1. Prevention
  2. Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis
  3. Immediate Care
  4. Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Reconditioning
  5. Organization and Administration
  6. Professional Responsibility

The following pages (sub-links) cover different areas that athletic trainers work in.

Please, take a look around.
