Suspension of enrollment for the undergraduate Athletic Training major
Following careful consideration, the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health (KCH) has determined that it must suspend enrollment for the undergraduate major in Athletic Training. Our recommendation is based on (1) the need to sustain academically rigorous and nationally ranked programs in Bio-Behavioral Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Community Health and Rehabilitation, and Cultural and Pedagogical perspectives on physical activity, and (2) an economic analysis of the cost of offering the undergraduate major in Athletic Training.
It is important to note that this recommendation is not a reflection of the quality of the undergraduate program. The Athletic Training Education Program at Illinois has always been an outstanding academic program. However, adverse budget conditions, in combination with increasingly stringent accreditation requirements, make it very difficult to sustain this high quality program.
Under the current proposal, all students currently enrolled in the program would be allowed to graduate from a CAATE accredited undergraduate Athletic Training Education program. In addition, students enrolled in KIN 181 for Fall 2009 may apply for entry to the program in Spring 2010, and those who are admitted will be allowed to graduate from a CAATE accredited program. The department will continue to offer all courses and clinical experiences required in order for these students to graduate in a timely manner. Admissions into the undergraduate Athletic Training Education program will be suspended following the Fall 2009 admissions cycle. The department will provide advising for any newly admitted 2009 students who may be interested in athletic training to ensure they find suitable alternatives for undergraduate study.
The department plans to continue to offer a master's degree concentration in Athletic Training and Dr. Steven Broglio would remain the director of this graduate program.
